UPDATE 12:16 PM EDT --
An active shooter has been confirmed at Fort Stewart in Georgia, triggering a full lockdown of the installation.
The base is home to over 20,000 soldiers and headquarters the 3rd Infantry Division - a heavily armored combat force central to U.S. Army operations since WWI.
Fort Stewart spans 280,000 acres and includes live-fire ranges, training facilities, and the nearby Hunter Army Airfield, making it a key hub for rapid deployment.
The 3rd ID has been deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan and plays a frontline role in global force readiness.
The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is responding; casualties have been reported, but no official count yet.
Police and EMS are on scene treating it as a mass casualty situation after early reports of five shooting victims. The base REMAINS under lockdown, with orders to stay inside and secure doors and windows.
