Putin's Nuclear Threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia would use nuclear weapons only in the context of an "existential threat" to the country or its regime. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that Russia has a public concept of domestic security detailing the reasons for using nuclear arms, emphasizing that they can be used if there is an existential threat to Russia.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin has put Russia's strategic nuclear forces on high alert and warned that he could view the prospect of defeat in Ukraine as an existential threat, potentially leading to the use of a nuclear weapon.

On June 4, 2025, Putin reiterated that Russia is prepared to use nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or independence is threatened.

Additionally, on November 19, 2024, Putin formally lowered the threshold for Russia's use of nuclear weapons, allowing for a potential nuclear response even to a conventional attack supported by a nuclear power.

On June 4, Sergei Shoigu, former Minister of Defense in Russia, and presently the Secretary of the Federation Council, arrived in Pyongyang, North Korea for high level talks. Shoigu was sent on this trip by direct order of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The topic of discussion included the instructions on how Russian and North Korea will attack the USA and NATO. The attack date will be some time between next week and July 4th.
