Islamic Republic official: Our information shows that instead of negotiating, we must prepare for war

Date: July 19, 2025

A senior Iranian political official, in an interview with Press TV, the Islamic Republic's English-language network, emphasized that Tehran's assessment is that the purpose of the negotiations is to disarm Iran to compensate for Israel's weakness in the next war, and the Islamic Republic should be prepared for war instead of negotiating.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reiterated Thursday that any possible negotiations should be in line with the security realities in the region and be based on it.

He said Tehran was not willing to engage in new negotiations with the United States unless the framework and agenda are completely different from previous negotiations.

Our information shows that Washington is looking for negotiations aimed at preparing for war, not achieving peace. If that’s the case, we don’t see any reason to waste time, and we prefer to focus on preparing for conflict.”

He said any new round of negotiations should have “serious and practical guarantees” and warned that without such guarantees, negotiations could be merely a cover for U.S. deceptive security measures.

Earlier, Ismail Baghaei, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said at his weekly press conference on Monday that "date, time and place" for the meeting of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Whitakaf, have not yet been determined.

"As long as we do not ensure the effectiveness of diplomacy and the negotiation process, we will not enter such a process," he said.

"Tehran has made clear conditions for the start of any new negotiations, including serious attention to Israel's nuclear program and weapons of mass destruction," the senior Iranian official told Press TV.

"No one in the region will accept that the disarmament process will only include Iran or other countries in the region, while a regime like Israel, which has a bloody approach, is gaining more weapons every day," he said.

The official of the Islamic Republic also described Israel's valid punishment and compensation to Iran as other basic conditions for Tehran to negotiate, and warned that otherwise, any negotiation could once again be the basis for the start of a new war.

“This is a problem for the United States, and we still don’t know how they’re going to solve this problem.”

The Washington Post quoted U.S. officials as saying talks between Washington and Tehran are expected to resume soon.

The Trump administration believes the Islamic Republic still wants to reach a diplomatic agreement on its nuclear program even after the recent US-Israeli attacks.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there would be no agreement with the United States without recognizing the "right to enrichment.

The senior official told Press TV: “We need to receive guarantees that Mr. Whitcaf is acting as a mediator in order to achieve a solution, not that there is a new arson against Iran on his agenda. “It’s very difficult to provide such guarantees, but yet we’re ready to give another chance, hear the words of the American side, and assess their practical actions in this regard.
