A High-Rise building at East 42nd Street at Second Avenue in Midtown Manhattan Faces possible Collapse.

The 37-story skyscraper at 235 East 42nd Street — once the global headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer — has been declared structurally unstable after construction workers discovered buckling support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors early Tuesday morning.

Streets in a wide area around the former Pfizer complex (near Grand Central Terminal) remain closed as structural engineers monitor the steel-frame structure and prepare emergency stabilization measures.

As of about 1:00 PM eastern Time,. Chief Esposito of the Fire Department revealed that Emergency Measuring Equipment installed when the New York City Department of Buildings arrived, indicate the collapsing Floors ARE STILL MOVING.

The buckled structural steel beams are on floors 21 and 22.  There are sixteen (16) additional floors ABOVE those buckled beams.

I spoke to a structural engineer.   He told me that while he did not personally inspect the scene, he has viewed video of the buckled beams.   He said "If those floors with the buckling beams finally give-way, those top 16 floors could literally slide off the building and come crashing down 21 floors onto the street below. "

He went further, saying "If they don't slide off the building completely, they could end up re-positioning weight in such a way that the ENTIRE building collapses  -- all 37 floors."

Evacuations of nearby buildings, including a New York City Public School, have been undertaken and all traffic on the nearby streets has been shut off.   Grid Lock is already occurring in Manhattan traffic.
