Note: The US already gave Iran 48-hour notice. The US starting bombing Iran 2 hours before the 48 hour noticed ended. The US has already taken over Kharg Island.

(Khark) is a vital Iranian continental island in the Persian Gulf, located ~25km off the Iranian coast, that exports up to 90% of Iran's crude oil. Often called a "Forbidden Island" or "orphan pearl," it operates as a major terminal with 30 million barrels of storage.

Key Strategic Importance:

  • Oil Hub: As the primary terminal for Iranian oil (roughly 950 million barrels annually), its deep waters allow for the loading of large supertankers, with China as the main recipient.

  • Strategic Vulnerability: The island is considered the economic backbone of Iran and a prime target for curbing Iran's revenue.

  • 2026 Conflict: In March 2026, U.S. forces conducted air strikes targeting military infrastructure (missile and naval mine storage) on the island, aimed at preventing threats to the Strait of Hormuz, while initially sparing the oil infrastructure.

  • Geography: It is a small coral outcrop located northwest of Bushehr, holding immense military and economic importance.

The island is vital to funding the Iranian government and military, making it a critical, sensitive asset.
