Reports are coming in claiming President Donald Trump has ordered the shutdown of a large U.S. Military Base in Greece.  The base is presently a key Logistics point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine situation.  NATO has been using this base to ship weapons for Ukraine.

Greek media reports that the closure of the U.S. military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, follows a joint request from Putin and Erdogan. The base, a key NATO logistical hub, had been a point of contention, particularly with Turkey.

If these reports are confirmed, the move represents a diplomatic concession that could alter the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek press reports highlight that the closure is seen as a strategic loss for Greece, which has strengthened military ties with the U.S. in recent years. The Alexandroupoli base played a role in regional security and military logistics, particularly in supporting NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.

The Trump administration has yet to officially comment on the reports, and it remains unclear whether the decision will be permanent or part of a broader realignment of U.S. military assets.

About the US NATO Base in Greece

The United States has had a military presence in Alexandroupolis, Greece, which has been a key logistical hub for US and NATO operations in southeastern Europe. In February 2023, hundreds of US soldiers arrived in Alexandroupolis to facilitate the shipment of American and NATO weapons and personnel to Central and Eastern Europe.

As of February 24, 2025, President Trump has ordered the closure of the US military base in Alexandroupolis, which has raised concerns among Greek officials.

The base in Alexandroupolis has been a point of tension with Turkey, which has long opposed US military activity in the area. The base has been used for the transport of military material, including tanks, armored vehicles, and helicopters, destined for NATO bases in Central and Eastern Europe.  The US personnel are settled in the Giannoulis military base as provided for in the Greek-American Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA).

The port of Alexandroupolis is strategically located on NATO's eastern flank and has important military logistical significance.

It is used principally by travelers, but it has also been allocated to the US as a base within the framework of the defense cooperation agreement.  Facilities with a capacity of 300-400 people are being built to accommodate the US soldiers who use the port to go to the Balkans and European countries.
