Full "public" Report Summary:
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Israel launched an airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, also known as “Sayyid Muhsan”. The strike occurred in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Background
The airstrike was reportedly in retaliation for a rocket attack on Saturday, July 27, 2024, that killed 12 children and teenagers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah denied involvement in the attack, but Israel accused the group of responsibility.
Details of the Strike
According to Israeli officials, the airstrike was a “targeted elimination” carried out by Israeli fighter jets. The IDF claimed that Shukr was killed in the strike, while Lebanese sources initially reported that he had survived.
Casualties and Damage
At least one civilian was killed, and several others were injured in the strike. The building targeted was damaged, with reports of rubble and debris scattered across the streets.
International Reaction The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, expressed deep concern over the strike, calling it a “criminal act” that resulted in multiple civilian casualties. US Vice-President Kamala Harris also weighed in, stating that Israel has the right to defend itself, but emphasizing the need for a diplomatic solution to end the violence.
Flight Cancellations and Travel Disruptions
In response to the escalating tensions, several airlines, including Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Eurowings, Swiss International Air Lines, and Condor, suspended flights to Beirut International Airport. The cancellations were made “in an abundance of caution” to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
Ongoing Tensions
The airstrike and subsequent flight cancellations have heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon, with fears of a broader conflict. The situation remains volatile, and diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence.
