Iranian dry cargo ship Rona suffered an accident in the Caspian Sea on January 14, 2026, after sending an SOS signal while en route to Russia.   The vessel, which was sailing under the Iranian flag, was reportedly following a maritime route previously linked to arms shipments from Iran to Russia.

Turkmenistan’s Coast Guard responded swiftly to the distress call and successfully rescued all 14 crew members, who are citizens of Iran and India.   The rescue operation was conducted in accordance with international maritime regulations.

Preliminary investigations suggest the Rona may have been transporting military cargo, as tracking data shows the ship made approximately 20 voyages between Iranian ports (Amirabad and Anzali) and Russian ports (Astrakhan, Makhachkala, and Azov) from October 2024 to December 2025.

Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that all 14 individuals were safely evacuated and that the country is now conducting formal procedures in line with international rules. The ship is believed to have sunk near Turkmenistan’s waters.
