The Commander of Edwards Air Force Base, California spoke frankly last week to local government officials in California, about the potential of Chinese strikes on American military bases when China begins to take Taiwan.

Brigadier General Doug Wickert gave a sobering talk to community leaders on the likelihood of his base being hit by China in case Taiwan is invaded. 

When an Air Force General talks about the disparity of shipbuilding between the U.S. and China - pay attention.

When the Commander of a large American Air Force Base (AFB) in the Continental United States talks about China hitting his base in case of Chinese invasion or quarantine of Taiwan - pay even closer attention.

On May 7, 2025, the Edwards AFB Commander talked very openly about the reality of the need for local leaders to prepare for a Pearl Harbor like strike on his base and others inside the U.S.

“Brig. Gen. Doug Wickert, 412th Test Wing commander, delivered a sobering assessment of China’s growing military capabilities during a recent briefing to community leaders.

Sponsored by the Edwards Air Force Base Civilian-Military Support Group, the event focused on the need for robust military-community partnerships in preparation for potential disruption of public services, including Beijing-sourced cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.”

The General went on, “Bringing the issue closer to home, Wickert stressed the Antelope Valley’s crucial role in national defense and deterrence, particularly Northrop Grumman's B-21 Raider production line at Plant 42, and the aircraft’s test and development facilities at Edwards.

“If I was Chairman Xi and it’s time to go [to war], guess what I’m gonna target first?” he asked. “So like it or not, we’re all in this together.”

Wickert described a recent week-long combat readiness exercise at Edwards that culminated with participation from local municipality emergency managers in a full-day tabletop drill. The exercise simulated attacks on the regional power grid and persistent communication disruptions. He acknowledged the potential for martial law and the need for close military-civilian cooperation under such circumstances.

“The only way to win the next war is to prevent it from happening in the first place,” Wickert said, paraphrasing President Dwight Eisenhower. "That’s why the technology and capability that we are developing up at Edwards, and that this community, the Aerospace Valley, is a part of, is so important.”

Wickert concluded by urging community-wide preparedness, including further dialogue and drills between local governments and the base, to deter conflict.

“If this war happens, it’s going to happen here. It’s going to come to us. This is why we’re having this conversation,” he said. "The more ready that we are, the more likely that we’re going to change Chairman Xi’s calculus.”

The message is unmistakable - China will hit U.S. Bases in case of a Chinese move on Taiwan.

Don’t get grumpy on social media and say Taiwan has nothing to do with us, China has decided it does.

Analyst's Remarks

This blind-sided me.  I hadn't even considered the possibility that a China move against Taiwan would involve a China strike on the mainland US.   

The fact that the Commander of Edwards Air Force Base not only thinks it can happen, he is warning local officials to prepare for it actually happening, is staggering to me.

Now, I have no additional information about any OTHER military bases, but if Edwards AFB in California is already known to be on CHina's target list, then it is safe to believe OTHER bases on the West coast may be on China's target list too.  In particular, the US Navy base at Bremerton, WA, and the US Navy Base at Long Beach/San DIego, CA.

It seems to me that ALL of those bases would be servicing any US Conflict in the Pacific, and so ALL of those bases would likely be targets.

Moreover, the fact that the Commander at Edwards AFB has already told this to local officials (he did so on May 7) tells me they believe such a situation may not be far off!

I URGE you in the strongest possible terms, to prepare as best you can for something like this.  Emergency food, water, medicines you need to live.  A portable generator for temporary electric supply (and fuel for it) if, as the Commander warns, there is sabotage to the regional electric grid, COMMUNICATIONS GEAR so you can talk to your family when they are out and about.   

Just today, SPAIN is suffering a complete telephone outage, nationwide.  No land lines, no cellphones, no Internet! ! ! !   You really SHOULD make preparations so you can have comms available for you and your loved ones and/or your nearby neighbors.  A CB radio, or a HAM radio, or Family Radio Service (FRS) or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) seems to be a smart move to get, while you still can get one of them.

I have no information at all about any timeline, but I was told today, that if the military is now telling this to local officials, then it seems they believe this is coming soon.
