China defies Trump’s blockade of Strait of Hormuz

A tanker previously sanctioned by the United States has sailed past American naval forces near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over escalating tensions in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
The vessel, identified as the Rich Starry and linked to China, moved through the region without interference despite being under US sanctions since 2023 for its involvement in trade with Iran.
Its transit came just a day after the United States began enforcing a naval blockade aimed at restricting access to Iranian ports.
The blockade is part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump to pressure Iran into complying with renewed nuclear demands.
The US Navy has deployed a significant military presence to the narrow waterway, including destroyers, sonar-equipped ships, and minesweepers, effectively monitoring traffic through the 24-mile-wide passage.
Although the Rich Starry did not enter restricted waters directly tied to Iranian ports, it sailed close enough to US warships to draw attention.
The tanker had departed from a port in the United Arab Emirates carrying approximately 250,000 barrels of methanol. Satellite tracking had earlier fueled speculation that its route could trigger a direct confrontation.
President Trump has issued stark warnings regarding enforcement of the blockade, stating that Iranian-linked vessels could face severe consequences if they approach restricted zones. He said such ships could be targeted using “the same system of kill” employed against drug trafficking operations in the Caribbean.
China responded sharply to the US action, criticizing the blockade as a destabilizing move. Foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun warned, “Such actions will only intensify contradictions, exacerbate tensions, undermine the already fragile ceasefire, and further jeopardise the security of navigation through the strait.”
The situation has added to already heightened global tensions. Iran had earlier disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.
The disruption contributed to volatility in global energy markets, pushing up fuel prices in the United Kingdom and beyond.
The current crisis follows a major military escalation earlier this year. On February 28, US and Israeli forces carried out coordinated strikes targeting Iran’s leadership. Iran retaliated with attacks on neighboring Gulf states, further destabilizing the region.
