The National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), are warning that unidentified hackers are targeting the Siemens S7 series across multiple critical infrastructure sectors, including manufacturing, energy, water and wastewater, chemical, food and agriculture facilities.
Siemens S7 is Siemens' SIMATIC family of programmable logic controllers (PLCs)—industrial computers that automate physical processes by reading sensors and controlling pumps, valves, motors, and machinery in plants and factories.
Compromise of exposed or weakly protected units can disrupt critical processes, cause safety incidents, equipment damage, downtime, data theft, or cascading failures across energy, water, manufacturing, chemical, and food sectors.
No one is accusing Iran of involvement in this, but clearly, they cannot be ruled out. It was the USA who planted the STUXNET virus into Iran Programmable Logic Controllers to wreck their nuclear centrifuges. Maybe Iran decided they could do similar - or worse - to USA Programmable Logic Controllers? Maybe Iran thinks "turnabout is fair play?"
