The shooting happened around 1:10 p.m. near 14th and Vliet streets, about seven blocks from the RNC’s soft zone.
The victim, a male, was armed with two knives and was reportedly “swinging knives at an individual and/or the officers.”
Five Ohio police officers from Columbus were involved in the shooting, as part of their assignment to assist with security at the RNC.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is investigating the incident, with the Greenfield Police Department serving as the lead law enforcement agency.
Reactions and Statements
Milwaukee’s police chief stated that there was no indication the shooting was related to the RNC itself.
The Columbus Fraternal Order of Police confirmed that members of their department were involved in the shooting, but provided limited details.
Alexi Worley, a spokesperson for the RNC’s joint command center, echoed the police chief’s statement, saying there was no evidence linking the shooting to the convention.
Local residents expressed anger and frustration, questioning why out-of-state officers were present in their neighborhood.

The shooting occurred just three days after former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated in a shooting on Saturday.
The RNC had been underway in Milwaukee since Monday, with a heavy police presence throughout the week.

The incident took place 3 blocks from the RNC facility, just inside the security zone. Information indicates 2 men were in an altercation and one pulled a knife on the other. A Police Officer fired upon the knife wielding man, killing him.
